I am a professional ski instructor, alpine race coach and personal trainer. Currently In the winter – spring time I am based in Courchevel France. I teach all ages from young whippersnappers aged 4+ to the old and wise aged 60+ and all abilities from complete beginners to trainee instructors. In the summer to autumn months I work as an alpine race coach, fitness coach, personal trainer and web/graphic designer. I am privileged enough to say I have worked with some of the best junior ski racers within the UK both privately and for established race teams in snow domes across the UK and on glaciers across Europe. I am also involved in running performance courses for both trainee ski instructors and qualified ski instructors for JJC Training and New Generation Ski and Snowboard School in snow domes and European glaciers during the summer to autumn months.
I have been interested in sport most notably skiing from a young age and have been a qualified BASI (British Association of Snowsport Instructors) ski instructor since 16 years of age, From a young age I use to regularly compete in local dry ski slope ski races around the north west of England and North Wales for Merseyside ski club. During my late teens despite my best eorts I realized I did not have the correct level of resources and natural ability to take my skiing on to an elite level. At which point I decided to channel my passions into a career within sport, specically the snowsports industry. Over the years I have tailored my education to enhance my coaching and instructing skills. This was the reason I decided to study Sport and Exercise Science at Liverpool John Moores University, a world leading institute in the eld of Sport and Exercise Science and also the rst university in the UK to research and teach sport and exercise sciences. At University I gained an in depth understanding in all aspects of sport science including Nutrition and Supplementation, Biomechanics, Sport Psychology and my specialist area of Human Anatomy and Performance Physiology.
From 2007-2011 I worked, as a ski instructor for Chill Factor e and the head development race coach for Chill Factor e Alpine Race Team. I have taken great professional pride working at what was then a recognized centre of excellence for snowsport as part of a small team of coaches setting up and running an extremely successful academy pathway for young people to initially learn to ski and then compete for a successful race team for Chill Factore. Many of the children I have coached and continue to coach are amongst the best in their age categories within the UK and across Europe.
Due to my background in sport and exercise science and personal training one of my other rolls was to organize and run all tness training and testing sessions for race team members aged 14+ during all race team preseason training camps that ran throughout the spring, summer and autumn months. I also set up with Liverpool John Moores University School of Sport Science a work based learning sport science support program for Chill Factore Alpine Race Team junior athletes. This program allowed our teenage athletes access to world-class sports science laborites for fitness testing and LJMU students the rare opportunity to work with top junior athletes that compete within a sport that requires a uniquely multifaceted level of fitness at the elite level.
I left my position at Chill Factore with the aim to complete one of my life long goals of attaining the BASI Level 4 International Ski Teacher Diploma qualification, which is the highest possible professional ski qualification in the world. I felt I had to base myself more permanently in the European Alps. In order to gain this top level amongst other tough modules I had to compete as an alpine ski racer and pass what is known as The Euro Test. If you are unfamiliar with the Euro Test, it involves months of intense dedication and training both on technical skiing but also on physical conditioning. The Euro Test itself is a Giant Slalom timed race in which you have to finish within 18% of the equivalent of a world leading elite 0 point FIS ski racers team, set on that day. With only 2 attempts allowed at each Euro Test the pass rates can be extremely low. I passed my Euro Test in Maria Alm Austria on my first run. On this particular race only 6 out of 96 people passed, I was the only British racer to pass of which I am extremely proud.
Now I have achieved this life long goal I have set myself new long-term goals. In-between my work as a ski professional I intend to gain further experience in long distance running races with the ultimate goal of attempting the Marathon Des Sables in 2016. Professionally I aim to work towards becoming a BASI Alpine Trainer helping others looking to follow a career in the Snowsports industry. I also intend to branch out do more work as a personal trainer during the summer months. I believe for both of these new professional goals, the unique skills I have gained over the past 13 years working as a professional snowsports and fitness coach with junior athletes and recreational skiers and trainee instructors sets me apart and allow me to provide a unique service. I am genuinely excited about these new goals and I am eager to learn new skills from the people I meet and also from the new situations I will find myself in along the path to these goals.
