For the first few days, we’ll ski together and identify the group’s strengths and weaknesses. After a few days, we’ll split groups and prepare for the BASI level 1 exam. We’ll focus on fun, on-piste technical skiing this week, regardless of conditions. We’ll be working towards building a solid technical base before tackling the teaching modules. Then at the weekend, we’ll introduce Off-Piste Safety and Avalanche Rescue.
In the mornings, we’ll focus on personal performance, on the piste with three days racing in the gates. In the afternoons we’ll run teaching sessions and ensure everyone has a solid technical understanding. Again, at the weekends we’ll continue having fun and learning about Off-Piste Safety and Avalanche Rescue.
Four-day BASI Level 1 exam.
In the mornings we’ll be exploring with our backpacks on, to begin using our avalanche safety equipment. We’ll venture off-piste in the mornings when the conditions are best, and in the afternoons we’ll practice some teaching ready for BASI Level 2.
This week, we’ll have a fun performance week. Dependent on conditions, we’ll ski on and off-piste playing around, getting used to different snow types and finding which aspect of skiing we like best. This will also be a huge week for progression as you find your feet off-piste.
Shadowing lessons on the slopes. This week you’ll see how the instructors cope in varying conditions, with kids and adult groups. You’ll learn about group management, how to help kids have fun and the differences in how people learn. You’ll come away with lots of new teaching ideas you can put into practice if you decide to become a ski instructor.
At the beginning of week 7, we’ll focus on-piste performance on the state in gates. This will prepare you for the BASI Level 2 exam and ensure you can control your speed and line. Towards the end of the week, we’ll slow things down and perfect the central theme and teaching.
As we get closer to the BASI Level 1, we’ll split into two groups by strengths and weaknesses to develop our own skiing and share ideas. We’ll focus on short turns, long turns, bumps and variables and teaching. We’ll push hard on-piste to get the most performance out of the ski.
The exam is 10 days long, with two days off in the middle. It can be an intense time to make sure you’re eating well, getting plenty of rest and going into the exam with sharp skis! At the end of the exam we’ll celebrate and depending on the group’s desires, we could stay a night in a refuge in the backcountry or go on an adventure.
