BASI Level 1

The BASI Level 1 is the entry level BASI qualification for people that are looking to become a ski instructor, it allows you to teach skiing in a non mountain environment, in a snowdome or on a dry-slope. It will introduce to you BASI, their teaching models and exam style and is the starting point for all future BASI Instructors.

prerequisites

Before you start your BASI Level 1 qualification you should meet the following criteria as recommended by BASI. If you are unsure about your ski level and nervous about booking an exam or training package you can join us at one of our Open Days in the UK where a trainer can give you some honest feedback and advice.

Be able to ski parallel confidently, coping with a variety of conditions
Be able to ski parallel on red runs, making rhythmical short turns at a steady pace
Be able to ski parallel long turns on a green or easy blue slope with the skis carving the last two thirds of the turn
Be at least 16 years of age
It is recommended that applicants have completed at 16 full weeks of skiing

Breakdown of the BASI Level 1

The Level 1 qualification is made up of four key modules that all need to be completed to enable to you teach, these are:

5 Day Level 1 Exam: This on snow examination will asses both your technical and teaching ability
2 Day Outdoor First aid course
Safeguarding Children Module: An online safeguarding children module available through BASI
35 Hours Ski School Experience. This must be completed after your BASI Level 1 exam BASI will require a record and breakdown of ski school experience gained

You will also need a criminal records check to obtain your BASI License.

Getting There

11 Week Residential Course

I would like to spend an extended period of time in a ski resort and would require some training prior to taking my exam. I would like to get all of the modules completed in one hit rather than having to arrange these myself.

BASI Level 1 Stand Alone Course

I feel quite prepared for my Level 1 and I don’t think I need any training before the exam. I am only able to get a short time off from work to take the exam, so I will look at completing the additional modules at a later stage.

Work Opportunities

Working with your BASI Level 1

The BASI Level 1 qualifies you to teach in a non mountain environment, such as a snowdome or dry ski slope. Full time and part time jobs are available with wages at around £8 to £10 an hour. Due to the fact that the busiest times for snowdomes and dry slopes are often weekends and holiday time working with your BASI Level 1 could be a great and way to earn some money while you study. Working with your level 1 also gives you a taste of life as a ski instructor to help you decide if you want to continue through the BASI system.
